l have been looking at about where handball is from and l am surprised that some fools said it was from ireland. l always thought it was made in poland in the early 1930s. and l stick by my answer, but anyways WHAT DO YOU THINK/KNOW ?
thanks for al of your responces l have looked into this myself with a little of your guidance, and, l have realized that there are two different handballs, one is a small little game played like squash with your hands, it comes from ireland. the other one is team handball (feild handball) the game that l had in mind, which originates from acient greece where l gotr confusent was that a person that plays handball is called a 'scipper' a name that comes from the polish word sczipionista...once again thanks again l am now a little smarter 8/

Team handball has origins reaching as far as antiquity: urania in ancient Greece, harpaston in ancient Rome, fangballspiel in medieval Germany, etc. There r also records of handball-like games in medieval France, & among the Inuit in Greenland, in the Middle Ages, & in Ancient Africa, primarily Egypt. By the 19th century, there existed similar games of haandbold from Denmark, hazena in Bohemia & Slovakia, gandbol in Ukraine, torball in Germany, as well as versions in Ireland & Uruguay.

The team handball game as we know it today was formed by the end of the 19th century in northern Europe, primarily Denmark, Germany, Norway & Sweden. The Dane Holger Nielsen drew up the rules for modern handball (hÄndbold) in 1898 (and published them in 1906), & R.N. Ernst did something similar in 1897.

Once again you're a victim of the confusion that handball category causes. You see there is 2 types of handball court-handball & team-handball. Team handball is not a very well known sport in English speaking countries , but people do know about the hand wall version though that is not exactly a big sport.

#1 Court Handball: Involves 2-4 players , a ball, durable hands, & a few walls played on a court. Think of Squash without the rackets. Yes this Version of Handball was invented in Ireland & is a part of the Irish Gallic Games (GAA). It was Irish immigrants who brought the game to the United States, Canada, & Australia.

#2 As far as Poland being where Handball-Team is from that is not what the International Handball Federation or IOC Olympic Sports report. They report that handball in its modern form was invented around the late 19th century in DENMARK, SWEDEN, & Germany. It was German physical education teachers who developed the rules & created the field version of handball. Field Handball was version at the 1936 Summer Games.

Team Handball- In its modern version was the preferred version of the Scandinavians. In 1946 the new 7X7 indoor version of handball had its 1st World Championships & was added to the Olympics in 1972.
