The modern game actually grew out of three sports that were developed, independently, in three different European countries: The Czech hazena, the Danish handbold, & the German Torball.

Hazena was being played by Slovak peoples as early as 1892; its rules were first codified in 1906, by a college professor. Handbold (the Danish word for handball) was developed in 1898 by a teacher, Holger Nielsen, as an alternative to soccer. In 1906, Nielsen revised the rules considerably & began organizing competitions outside the school at which he taught. Similarly, Torball was created in 1915 by a German gymnastics teacher, Max Heiden.

Handball aka Ballwall was created in 1527, Galway, in western Ireland.

Team handball has origins reaching as far as antiquity: urania in ancient Greece, harpaston in ancient Rome, fangballspiel in medieval Germany, etc. There r also records of handball-like games in medieval France, & among the Inuit in Greenland, in the Middle Ages, & in Ancient Africa, primarily Egypt. By the 19th century, there existed similar games of haandbold from Denmark, hazena in Bohemia & Slovakia, gandbol in Ukraine, torball in Germany, as well as versions in Ireland & Uruguay.

The team handball game as we know it today was formed by the end of the 19th century in northern Europe, primarily Denmark, Germany, Norway & Sweden. The Dane Holger Nielsen drew up the rules for modern handball (håndbold) in 1898 (and published them in 1906), & R.N. Ernst did something similar in 1897.

The Game

Handball has developed from a number of similar games, which were in existence at the start of the 20th century. These games were played in Central and Northern Europe and in 1926 Standard International Rules were established. In 1928 the International Amateur Handball Federation was established by 11 countries during the Summer Olympic Games. This body later became the present International Handball Federation.

Handball (also known as team handball, field handball, European handball, or Olympic handball) is a team sport where two teams of seven players each (six players & a goalkeeper) pass & bounce a ball trying to throw it in the goal of the opposing team.

The game has a goal similar to but smaller than the one in association football, though as the name implies, the basic method of handling the ball involves the players' hands rather than their feet. The game has been played internationally since the 1920s
